Preview — Duchamp by Calvin Tomkins. Because he lived in New York City on 14th Street for a period of his life, his biography seems surprisingly present day.
The author’s intimacy with the subject and glorious prose style, wit, and deep sense of irony–“the only antidote to despair”–make him the perfect writer to bring this stunning life story to intelligent readers everywhere. Tompkins does his level best to provide a context for the work, but while he uncovers information about how the work came into being as in his account of the famous “Fountain” readymade and does a good job of describing the formal qualities of individual pieces, he doesn’t seem to have the theoretical equipment for more trenchant analysis.
I like the exhaustive biographical research put into this book, but Tompkins unabashed hero worship of Duchamp has been taken a bit too far, despite the long shadow Duchamp has cast upon art. I looked at several other books about Duchamp before choosing this one. This book paints a real vivid portrait of MD the person as opposed to the comic book charcter you’ve all been instructed to adore. Alot of it could be considered gossip but when a guy’s entire oeurve is about humor and eroticism, why not read the stories behind the jokes and the love affairs that inspired the work?

If you are remotely interested in learning about the beginning of conceptual art – and Duchamp – the father of this movement – this book is a very good place to start. This is the best Duchamp bio. Marcel Duchamp’s life is sometimes described as his greatest work of art, but not until now, with the publication of Calvin Tomkins’s monumental biography, has the interplay of life and art been fully revealed.
The Shock of the New: Solid biography except for some minor New-Yorker-magazine-edited-by-Tina-Brown type gossip intrusions in the text.
This is the most thorough book I’ve ever read on Duchamp. Very readable biography that immerses you in the world Duchamp lived in and explains the way Etant Donne got made.
