It was a surprising beirce for a story that was so short. Excellent, and highly recommended. But you’ll see nothing of the battle in this story. Dec 18, Althea Ann rated it it was ok. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. The process was truly fantastic and engrossing.

It really didn’t work for me – I found it too over-the-top and contrived. Refresh and try again.

Suddenly he realizes that what is burning around him is his own home, which was hit by a shell, and he xmbrose the mutilated corpse of his mother in the grass. Empathy for the boy and soldiers? To say more would spoil it.
