Beginning with Houellebecq’s novels, this book explores the concept of “Depressive Realism” in literature and philosophy, the proposition that the facts of life are bleak and unkind. Of all the thinkers Jeffery draws upon, the one he gets the most mileage out of is, interestingly, David Foster Wallace, who pops up again and again in these pages. We generally know where we stand in relation to reality and don’t care to know any more. Hopefully Jeffery keeps writing along these lines.
